Checklist for the holiday – for those with diabetes

🧳 Packing – diabetes equipment

  • Insulin (pen/pump/spare pump)

  • CGM / blood glucose meter + extra sensors

  • Test strips and lancets

  • Syringes/insulin pens + needles

  • Spare catheters / infusion sets

  • Insulin cooler (e.g. FRIO)

  • Glucose meter (blood sugar meter)

  • Batteries and chargers for pump and CGM

  • Glucose gel / dextrosol / dextrose

  • Snacks with slow carbohydrates (e.g. crackers, nuts, raisins)

  • Diary or app to log blood sugar and insulin

🌡️ Heating & Cooling – Equipment Protection

  • Sensor/CGM protection (overpatch, tape, etc.)

  • Protective case for insulin (at high temperatures)

  • Keep insulin cool but not ice cold.

  • Protection from the sun and swimming (e.g. clothing, UV protection, sensor patches)

🧾 Travel documents & security

  • Medical certificate (for airport checks etc.)

  • Travel insurance that covers diabetes

  • European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

  • Emergency number and information about the nearest health center/hospital

  • Extra prescription or contact information for diabetes clinic

🛫 Before the trip

  • Distribute diabetes equipment into different bags (in case something gets lost)

  • Always carry insulin and CGM in your carry-on luggage

  • Inform fellow travelers about how to help in case of an emergency

  • Check time zones if you are traveling long distances (insulin doses may need to be adjusted)

🏖️ Once in place

  • Check blood sugar more often when in the sun, swimming, or active

  • Keep in mind that physical activity can cause delayed sensation

  • Always have something sweet close at hand

  • Keep an eye on the temperature – both for equipment and blood sugar
